ZF unveils revolutionary Air Compressor for Electrified Commercial Vehicles
Friedrichshafen, Germany – ZF’s Commercial Vehicle Solutions (CVS) division has introduced its latest electrification technology, unveiling the e-comp Scroll air compressor designed for electric trucks, buses, and coaches. The innovative system is making its world premiere at the Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo in California, USA, and Auto Shanghai in China.
Revolutionizing Air Compression in Zero-Emission Vehicles
As the transportation industry shifts toward sustainable mobility, compressed air remains essential for braking systems, suspension, and auxiliary functions. Traditionally, air compressors were powered by internal combustion engines, but in electric vehicles, the compressor requires an independent electric motor.
With electric vehicles operating at lower noise levels, traditional piston compressors create noticeable sound disturbances, affecting passenger comfort. The e-comp Scroll eliminates this issue by using interlocking scrolls to compress air with minimal vibration and noise emissions around 67dB(A)—equivalent to a typical office environment.
Eco-Friendly, Cost-Efficient Design
ZF’s oil-free compressor eliminates the need for oil lubrication, reducing maintenance costs and enhancing Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). The system is also equipped with an integrated inverter and liquid cooling, ensuring air compression at a temperature below 90°C (194°F) while efficiently managing variable-speed operation.
